Célian Laurent.
Manhattan royalty.
Notorious playboy.
Heir to a media empire.
…And my new boss.

I could have impressed him, if not for last month’s unforgettable one-night stand.
I left it with more than orgasms and a pleasant memory–namely, his wallet.
Now he’s staring me down like I’m the dirt under his Italian loafers, and I’m supposed to take it.
But the thing about being Judith “Jude” Humphry is I have nothing to lose.
Brooklyn girl.
Infamously quirky.
Heir to a stack of medical bills and a tattered couch.
When he looks at me from across the room, I see the glint in his eyes, and that makes us rivals.
He knows it.
So do I.
Every day in the newsroom is a battle.
Every night in his bed, war.
But it’s my heart at stake, and I fear I’ll be raising the white flag.

Big Thoughts

Fuck. I love Célian so much. Why might you ask? Because from like the first page he pretends he hates everyone and everything but behind everyone’s back, he’s like saving baby whales and helping grandmothers cross the road. A one night stand and Cel is pussy-whipped like a boy with mommy issues. Which consequently, he has.

Jude is so fierce and strong..it’s like, so inspiring. She lost her mother and her father is dying of cancer. She wears Chucks with dresses and isn’t trying to impress anyone. She is trying to keep her head above water, keep the house from being taken, keep the lights on, and pay off massive student debt. When she lands a job at Célian’s news network (unbeknownst to her and her lady bits) things are looking up. Like way up. Like 9″ or the like up. I’ll stop.

Anyways, Cel, like the mommy issues ball buster that he is, plays the whole “you can’t have her even though I can’t either” game with literally anyone who looks even slightly her way. I love it. He is so stressed about trying to avoid that good tang that well, he basically trips right into it..a lot. Jude from the very beginning was like, I ain’t trying to avoid that beautiful man piece or that real man piece, so help me baby prophet Elvis. So they play the back and forth game with lots of dirty filthy sex making and then there is a twist and then..something glorious happens at the end.

The end.

But What Does It Mean?

If you made it through all that vomit, snaps for you. I love this book so much. Shen is a divine creature and I’ve not read one book I didn’t like of hers. I am big trash for her stuff. This is actually my second read through of this book and it won’t be the last. If you honest to prophet Elvis love enemies to lovers, new adult, dirty sex, wholesome girls, and tragic men who fuck like porn stars..then pick this one up. I love that while this is a romance book, both characters are deeply invested in their work and things other than themselves. I adore when we get more than bland characters who are only on page to stick things in things. I mean I like those ones too but like, not always. Like, like, like.

Quality Quotables

“I’m talking Chris Pine perfect, Chris Hemsworth mammoth, and Chris Pratt charming. He was a triple-C threat, and I was S.C.R.E.W.E.D.”

“That thing could maybe fit in my gym bag. Not my vagina.”

“This man was a walking, talking orgasm. I was pretty sure I would come if he sneezed in my direction.”

“She really wanted to be pussy-slapped with all this sass.”
